As we move into spring, restaurants will gear up for the summer
season, and other groups looking forward to food gatherings, either for fun or fundraising. The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service here in Brunswick County will offer Safe Plates programming for food service, volunteers, occasional quantity cooks, and consumers. These classes teach the importance of food safety and how to keep your family, friends, and customers safe from a foodborne illness. Both Safe Plates food safety programs have been developed by N.C. Cooperative Extension and NCSU. 

Safe Plates for Food Handlers is a short training that covers basic information on safe food handling. This course is also appropriate for volunteer or temporary food handlers, such as those working at soup kitchens, food pantries, or fundraising events. This class is also ideal for anyone working or seeking employment in a food establishment. Safe Plates for Food Handlers is not a Food Protection Manager Certification class but would be a good review for those who have been previously
certified and need to retake an American National Standards Institution
(ANSI) manager test.

The Safe Plates for Food Handlers course will be held on March 14th from 9
a.m. until 1 p.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Brunswick County Training Center, 25 Referendum Drive in the Government Complex in Bolivia. The registration fee is $20 and the exam is available for an additional fee.


For those seeking a more intensive class, we have the Safe Plates Food
Protection Manager Certification courseIt will be offered on April 4th and 11th. This comprehensive course is appropriate for food service managers and supervisory staff in restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, childcare facilities, and other food-handling establishments. The classes will meet at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Training Center at the Government Center in Bolivia from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on each day. This two-day training is for those who are new to food service or have not taken a certification exam before. It is recommended, but not required, that participants attend both days. The registration fee is $125 per person. This includes all instruction, materials, and the exam.

Safe Plates for Food Managers course is different than other
food safety manager training because it is taught through case studies, storytelling, activities, and discussion. This class is interactive and encourages participants to engage with the material. Food service managers successfully completing the exam will meet the 2017 FDA Food Code requirement as an ANSI approved Certified Food Protection Manager. Managers who pass the test will receive a certificate to display in their operation which will verify to the local Environmental Health Department that they are in compliance. A certified person-in-charge (PIC) should be present at all times the establishment is in operation. It is recommended
that participants pay the registration fee in person at the Extension office
in Bolivia and pick up books and study materials before the class.

The Safe Plates for Food Managers course is also available in a
virtual format. This can be accessed 24/7 online from NCSU. The ANSI test will be provided locally in person after the online materials have been completed.

Pre-registration is required for both classes. Seating is limited to the first 30
