The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is:
- For limited resource youth and families with children
- Based on the latest research in nutrition and physical activity
- Conducted by trained nutrition educators
- Federally funded since 1969
EFNEP helps participants learn skills and strategies to feed their family nutritious meals on a limited budget and improve their overall health. The skills learned also help families learn how to change behaviors that place them at risk for overweight and the diseases associated with being overweight.
As a result of their EFNEP experience, participants:
- Become better food resource managers
- Improve decision-making skills
- Adopt healthy eating behaviors
- Increase their daily physical activity
- Become more self-reliant
EFNEP youth curriculum is designed to address essential and core standards for each grade.
Lesson’s are developed to positively affect 5 key health behaviors:
- Increase the youth’s knowledge of human nutrition
- Increase the variety of foods in the youth’s daily diet
- Improve the youth’s ability to select low-cost nutritious meals for meals and snacks
- Improve food preparation and food safety practices to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses
- Increase daily physical activity
Collaboration with community-based organizations, schools, and other entities serving limited resource families is key to EFNEP success. EFNEP classes can be held in partnership with the following (Just to name a few):
- K-12 Classrooms
- Communities in Schools
- Health Department
- Parenting Classes
- Public Housing Authorities
- Community Centers
- Faith-Based Organizations
- Food Pantries
- Recreational Centers including YMCA’s and Boys and Girls Clubs
