Description:
Learn how to properly install and maintain wetland and riparian plants to provide the greatest chance for survival. This free, interactive workshop is brought to you by N.C. Cooperative Extension, Chatham County Center and Mellow Marsh Farm.
During this hands-on workshop participants will gain practical, real-world knowledge and skills as they rotate through the following stations:
- Plant Material – Tour the nursery and learn about different container sizes and the advantages of each, how to properly and handle and store different plant materials, the commercial and seasonal availability of different species and propagules, and how to order from and work with nurseries, including contract growing
- The Case for Biodiversity and Native Species – Learn what native plants are and their critical role in functional and healthy ecosystems, especially the native wildlife, insects, and pollinators that depend on native plant species. Discover how understanding biodiversity, habits, and adaption relate to successful stormwater devices.
- Hands-on Planting Methods for Wetland Plants – This station includes a demonstration of proper layout, spacing, and planting techniques for various sizes and types of plant material. We will examine planning considerations (construction schedule, weather, water level, existing vegetation, wildlife grazing, etc), staging and layout, and hands-on planting and establishment methods.
- Stormwater Control Measures (SCM) Update: What’s working and what’s not working and the current state of (SCM) technology
Please Note: This workshop will be held outside rain or shine! Please dress appropriately for outdoor conditions and uneven terrain, including sturdy footwear (no flip flops please).
Who should attend?
Municipal stormwater management inspectors and staff and other landscape professionals involved in the installation and maintenance of plants in stormwater ponds, constructed wetlands, rain gardens/bioretention, riparian buffers and other stormwater best management practices.
